The Mysterious Energy Grid Failures: Is Bill Gates Behind Them?

Date:

So, back in June 2023, Bangladesh faced this huge electricity blackout, and I mean huge—170 million people lost power just like that, overnight! Can you imagine? The whole electric grid just collapsed out of nowhere, throwing the entire country into darkness. It was chaos and confusion everywhere.

Interestingly ,few days back Europe faced their own power issues. They managed to get things back on track in Spain and Portugal, but it still confused everyone. What’s going on with these blackouts? Honestly, it raises some serious questions about the reliability of the infrastructure we all depend on.

Now, the Power Division in Bangladesh has launched an investigation into the grid failure that hit the southern districts of the country. The abrupt and widespread nature of the blackout has raised concerns about the stability and reliability of the energy grid in the region. With the lives and livelihoods of millions of people at stake, finding the root cause of these failures is crucial to prevent future outages.

Many people have started to point fingers at Bill Gates and his Terra Power initiatives, blaming them for the recent string of grid failures. Some scientists have even warned that the experimental nuclear plant backed by Bill Gates is ‘outright dangerous’. Gates, however, continues to advocate for nuclear power as a solution to climate change, urging the construction of new nuclear power plants instead of shutting down existing reactors

TerraPower, founded by Bill Gates, is advancing its Natrium reactor technology in the UK, initiating the Generic Design Assessment (GDA) process with the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. The Natrium reactor, a sodium-cooled fast reactor, promises enhanced safety and flexibility, generating up to 500 MWe of electricity with integrated molten salt energy storage. This design addresses the challenge of integrating renewable energy by providing reliable backup power. With successful regulatory experiences in the US, including a construction permit in Wyoming, TerraPower aims to play a significant role in the UK’s transition to a net-zero energy grid.

Commission and Bill Gates to launch €100 million clean energy fund

17 October 2018: The Commission and Breakthrough Energy, led by Bill Gates, will launch a new investment fund – Breakthrough Energy Europe – to help innovative European companies develop and bring radically new clean energy technologies to the market.

Commissioner Moedas, responsible for Research and Innovation and Bill Gates, Chairman of Breakthrough Energy Ventures, signed an official Memorandum of Understanding in the presence of Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič to establish the joint fund. With a capitalisation of €100 million, Breakthrough Energy Europe will give a strong signal to markets and investors that the global transition to a modern clean economy is here to stay.

With this initiative, the Commission takes action to continue leading in the fight against climate change and to deliver on the Paris Agreement. As our planet increasingly faces the unpredictable consequences of climate change and resource depletion, urgent action is needed to adapt to a more sustainable model and modernise Europe’s economy and industry.

The Commission is currently working on the long-term strategy for the reduction of greenhouse gases. The proposal will be published in November 2018, ahead of the COP24 in Katowice, Poland.

Concerns About Bill Gates’ Nuclear Power Initiatives

The nuclear power project backed by Bill Gates, specifically the Natrium reactor being developed by TerraPower in Kemmerer, Wyoming, has raised significant concerns among scientists and environmentalists. Critics argue that this initiative could be a dangerous diversion from more viable renewable energy solutions.

Criticism of Sodium-Cooled Fast Reactors

One of the primary criticisms comes from experts who highlight the historical failures associated with sodium-cooled fast reactors, which are at the core of the Natrium design. Arnie Gundersen, a nuclear expert, pointed out that this technology has a 70-year history of issues and warned that reviving it could misallocate public funds away from proven renewable technologies. The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) released a report indicating that sodium-cooled fast reactors may not only be less efficient in uranium use but also pose unique safety risks. For instance, sodium coolant can ignite when exposed to air or water, leading to potentially catastrophic situations such as rapid core melting.

Proliferation Risks

Another significant concern is related to nuclear proliferation. Fast reactors like Natrium typically require fuels that can be used in nuclear weapons, raising fears about terrorism and global security. Although Natrium plans to use high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU), which is less attractive for weaponization than highly enriched uranium, it still poses a risk compared to the lower-enriched fuels used in conventional light-water reactors. Experts like Jan Haverkamp from Greenpeace have labeled fast breeder reactors as “proliferation nightmares,” emphasizing the dangers they present.

Economic Viability and Delays

The economic feasibility of building new nuclear plants is also under scrutiny. The Natrium project has faced delays due to supply chain issues exacerbated by geopolitical tensions, particularly with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine affecting fuel availability. This raises questions about whether investing in new nuclear technology is prudent when faster and cheaper renewable energy options are available.

Renewable Energy Alternatives

Many scientists argue that focusing on advanced nuclear technology detracts from investing in renewable energy sources like wind and solar power, which have become increasingly cost-effective and efficient. Michael E. Mann, an atmospheric scientist, criticized Gates for downplaying these alternatives while promoting what he considers riskier technologies. Robert Howarth from Cornell University echoed this sentiment by stating that we can transition entirely to renewable energy without relying on nuclear power or fossil fuels.

The concerns surrounding Bill Gates’ nuclear power initiatives include historical failures of sodium-cooled reactors, safety risks associated with their operation, potential for nuclear proliferation, economic viability issues due to delays and costs, and the argument that investment should focus on proven renewable energy alternatives rather than experimental technologies.

Bill Gates Ted Talk Transcript From 2015:

When I was a kid, the disaster we worried about most was a nuclear war. That’s why we had a barrel like this down in our basement, filled with cans of food and water. When the nuclear attack came, we were supposed to go downstairs, hunker down, and eat out of that barrel.

So now billionaires are creating bunkers to get ready for something serious. Now, it’s not just the super-rich; millionaires and many wealthy individuals are also planning to escape and build their own shelters. They fear a nuclear event might happen, so they want to be underground.

The 12 companies below have raised over $570M since 2012. Thirteen deals have involved smart money investors.
