If you want to access your call history, you can use certain apps. This sounds great, but not everyone is aware of the potential harm it can cause. A new report has revealed a new scam in the market. In this scam, scammers promise to provide millions of people with information about Android users whose numbers they have. This means that users can access the call history of any number. A report by security research firm ESET revealed that 28 fake Android apps on the Google Play Store have been downloaded more than 7.3 million times and have even lured users into paying for fake data.
Researchers have named these apps “CallPhantom.” The new apps falsely claim to extract private call logs, SMS records, and even WhatsApp call history for any phone number entered by the user. In reality, these apps simply created fake data and asked users for a subscription fee to unlock this fake data.
According to ESET, the investigation began when researchers saw a post on Reddit discussing an app called “Call History of Any Number.” Published under the name Indian gov.in Developer, the app claimed to be able to extract the call history of any phone number provided by the user.
Researchers also found that the call history data provided by this app was completely fabricated. Instead, the app generated random phone numbers and associated them with names, call durations, and timestamps entered directly into the app’s code.
These fake call records were then shown to victims, but only if they paid for a subscription. Researchers later discovered 27 more apps with the same name on the Play Store. ESET said it had informed Google about these apps on December 16, 2025, after which all of them were removed from the platform.
