A horrific incident has been reported from Kolkata, West Bengal. The roof of a warehouse under construction at a transport depot in the Taratala police station area collapsed, trapping approximately 40 to 45 people inside. Two to three people have died from the debris. The fire service and Taratala police are conducting rescue operations.
According to eyewitnesses, a portion of the warehouse suddenly collapsed, causing heavy iron structures and concrete slabs to fall on workers working below, trapping them. Workers and nearby residents rushed to rescue those trapped under the debris.
Initial reports indicate that the warehouse was still under construction. However, it is unclear whether safety protocols were followed or whether structural deficiencies caused the collapse. A full investigation will be conducted after the rescue operation is completed. 100 NDRF troops have been deployed for relief and rescue operations, and special teams have already been dispatched from both Newtown and Kalyani.
Regarding the incident, a BJP worker said that those responsible should be hanged. “We have rescued at least 10 people from under the rubble, and many are still trapped. There should be no politics in this matter; government officials are also involved. Accountability must be fixed. People are still crying out for help from under the rubble. We hope that the Suvendu Adhikari government, which is a government of the poor, will deliver justice.”
The state government has opened a control room at the Nabanna State Secretariat for the incident, and has also issued helpline numbers 1070, 8697981070, 22143526, and 22535185.
