Congress leaders in New Delhi held a march to the Prime Minister’s residence on Tuesday (July 21). The march was led from Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence to the Prime Minister’s residence. Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, sat on a sit-in protest in front of the Prime Minister’s residence, where the Congress leaders’ protest continues.
Congress leaders are demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. During the protest, Congress leaders wore symbolic handcuffs.
According to news agency ANI, Congress leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge, Lok Sabha leader Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, KC Venugopal, Pawan Khera, and others, protested on Lok Kalyan Marg, demanding the resignation of the Prime Minister and Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Some Congress leaders were also detained during the protest.
Congress MP K. Suresh said, “They (the police) are brutally detaining us. We are protesting in front of the Prime Minister’s residence because yesterday the Delhi Police brutally attacked our students. The Prime Minister is saying nothing, the Home Minister is not making any statement. The Prime Minister is not speaking at all.”
Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge wrote on social media that the Congress Party stands with the students’ rights and their legitimate demands. We are sitting on a dharna outside the Prime Minister’s residence. This cowardly, dictatorial government must answer for the lathicharge and use of force. Modi and Shah are guilty of the crimes against our youth and must resign.
Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi wrote on X, “We are marching to Prime Minister Modi’s residence to demand answers for the brutality against young students yesterday. The government neither wants to take responsibility for this nor debate it in Parliament. The Prime Minister and Home Minister should resign for ruining the future of India’s youth.”
Police have detained several leaders protesting near 7 Lok Kalyan Marg. Congress leader Charanjit Singh Channi has been detained. Congress MP K. Suresh has also been detained. Later, leaders like Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi were also removed from the protest site by the police, put on a bus, and taken elsewhere.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh reached Lok Kalyan Marg and spoke with Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, regarding the ongoing Congress protest. Congress leaders are protesting on Lok Kalyan Marg. Several leaders have been detained by the police.
Security at the Prime Minister’s residence has been increased following the protest by Congress leaders near 7 Lok Kalyan Marg. Additional security forces have been deployed near the PM’s residence. Police have detained some of the protesting leaders.
Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, wrote on Twitter that the attack on students is an attack on every Indian family. “Prime Minister Modi thinks he can get away without answering, without facing consequences. He won’t be able to do that, and certainly not this time. I appeal to every patriotic Indian who believes our students deserve justice – join our protest in front of the Prime Minister’s residence. The voice of India’s students cannot be ignored,” he said.
