On Monday, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, expressed concern over the assault on a student in Jamui, Bihar, calling it deeply disturbing. He said that when “blind followers” normalize such thinking by considering control as culture, the mob begins to believe that it is the law.
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi wrote on X on Monday, “A video from Jamui, Bihar, is deeply disturbing. A 10th-grade boy and girl were forcibly stopped on the road. They were harassed, humiliated, and the girl was assaulted. The girl pleaded with folded hands to let her go, but the goons continued to touch and pull her inappropriately.”
Rahul Gandhi questioned who gave these people the right to behave in such a manner? Additionally, he wrote in the post, “This isn’t ‘culture,’ it’s patriarchy: the idea that any man has control over a girl’s body, her movements, and her likes and dislikes. When ‘blind followers’ normalize such thinking by considering control as culture, the mob begins to believe that it is the law.”
Rahul Gandhi demanded that everyone seen in the video be identified and the perpetrators prosecuted under POCSO and punished as soon as possible.
He further questioned, asking, “If this incident occurred on September 19th, why aren’t the culprits behind bars yet? The Bihar government should answer why a girl isn’t safe on the state’s roads at 7 p.m.?”
Jamui Superintendent of Police Vishwajeet Dayal stated that the incident occurred on September 19th and an FIR has been registered in the case. He added that the police are investigating. Three accused have been arrested in the case.
According to reports, the two minors are 10th-grade students and residents of Jamui city. After attending coaching classes on Saturday, they went on a scooter to visit Madwa Pahad.
While returning, some young men stopped them on the road and allegedly mistreated them. Someone filmed the entire incident. The incident came to light after the video went viral.
