After recovering from dengue, many patients complain of fatigue, weakness, and body aches for a few days or weeks. However, some may experience frequent forgetfulness, difficulty concentrating, difficulty remembering words during conversations, or even feeling mentally dull even after recovering from the illness.
Even after the dengue fever subsides and platelet counts return to normal, some people still complain of mental fatigue, lack of focus, and frequent forgetfulness.
This raises the question: is this simply post-dengue weakness, or could there be a neurological cause? According to neurologists, it can take some time for both the body and mind to fully return to normal after dengue.
Prolonged fever, lack of sleep, dehydration, poor eating habits, weakness, and stress during illness can affect a person’s concentration and mental performance. Therefore, mild forgetfulness or decreased attention spans are not always a sign of a serious brain complication.
If changes in memory or behavior persist, impair daily activities, or are accompanied by other neurological symptoms, it should not be dismissed as mere weakness.
It can take time for the body to return to normal after dengue. During this time, patients may experience mental fatigue or brain fog. This can include difficulty concentrating, difficulty remembering things, slowed decision-making, and persistent mental fatigue. This can be due to various factors, including lack of sleep, poor diet, insufficient water intake, weakness from prolonged fever, and stress. Many patients also significantly reduce physical activity during illness, which can further slow recovery.
In severe cases of dengue, the infection can rarely affect the nervous system. Therefore, it is important to understand the nature and duration of symptoms. A normal platelet count alone does not necessarily mean that every patient has fully recovered; the patient’s clinical condition and neurological symptoms are also important.
After recovering from dengue, the body should be given adequate rest. Get enough sleep, drink plenty of fluids, and eat a balanced diet as advised by your doctor. Once weakness subsides, normal physical activity can be gradually resumed.
It is better to gradually increase activity rather than immediately exerting the same level of work or study. Most importantly, some fatigue and decreased concentration may occur temporarily after dengue, but persistent memory problems, confusion, or other neurological changes are not necessarily just weakness. In such cases, timely consultation with a neurologist is essential.
