There were 19 deaths after COVID-19 vaccinations; doctors and public health experts demand an investigation.

Date:

February 5th, 2021: The COVID-19 vaccination drive was kicked off on January 16 in India. Since then, at least 19 health workers have died post-vaccination. Doctors and public health experts write to the health ministry, demanding an investigation into the deaths.

Several facts: the death of health workers has occurred within a few hours to up to five days after taking COVID-19 vaccine; the deceased were aged between 23 and 56 years; media reports highlighted cardiovascular problems or brain trauma as the cause behind each of the deaths; and that in all the cases, the vaccine involved was Covishield.

“So far, most of the cases of COVID-19 vaccine deaths have reportedly been due to cardiovascular and brain trauma. All these groups need to be examined immediately so that, at least, the reasons behind it are known,” Amar Jesani, an independent consultant, researcher and teacher in bioethics and public health told Gaon Connection. He is also editor of Indian Journal of Medical Ethics, and one of the signatories of the letter. Jesani urged that the investigations be made public so that there was no scepticism among the people about COVID-19 vaccination.

“The World Health Organization also says in its guidelines on COVID-19 vaccination that if two or more deaths occur after the vaccination from either the same vaccine or due to the same reason or are reported from one place, then group screenings must be undertaken,” pointed out Jesani. The deaths that have occurred so far do meet the World Health Organization’s definition of the adverse events occurring post vaccination,” he added.

On February 1,  47-year-old Mannu Pahan, a health worker from Ranchi in Jharkhand, died within 48 hours after being vaccinated against COVID-19. He died at the Medanta Hospital and his body has been sent for a post mortem.

Pahan is one of the 19 health workers in the country to lose his life after receiving the COVID-19 vaccination since the launch of COVID-19 immunisation drive on January 16.

A health worker at a private hospital in Ranchi, died of a suspected cardiac arrest on Tuesday night, a day after he was inoculated with the Covishield vaccine. While the family of Mannu Pahan (45), a housekeeping staff at Medanta Hospital, said he died because of some adverse effects of the vaccine.

Pahan, a resident of Ranchi’s Ormanjhi block, collapsed at his home while having dinner on Tuesday night and was taken to Medanta around 10:30pm, where he was declared brought, his family members said.

A medical team from Ranchi sadar Hospital and a WHO consultant reached the hospital to examine the situation. Ranchi civil surgeon Dr V B Prasad said: “The vaccine is completely safe and the death has nothing to do from his inoculation. He (Pahan) was administered the vaccine around 11:50am on Monday and did not show any symptoms of adverse effects. He was healthy throughout the day and has also reported to work on Tuesday. We have sent a team of doctors to evaluate the situation and, as per preliminary findings, he suffered a heart attack.”

However, Pahan’s family said he did not have any underlying ailments. His daughter-in-law Sabita Pahan said, “He did not suffer from any kind of heart ailment and was not on any medication. I believe he developed complications due to the vaccine.”

Health department officials dismissed the family’s claims and said that they will preserve the viscera of the deceased and will send it for tests so that no one has any doubt about the vaccine. “Across the country, more than a dozen people have died after getting vaccinated, but nothing has been proved against the efficacy of the shots. We will do all that it takes to ascertain the reason for Pahan’s death,” Prasad said.

The health department is still refusing to accept the truth about vaccine deaths and side effects.
