If this technology is successful in human trials, it could significantly transform dialysis and kidney replacement treatments in the future.
In typical dialysis, a machine outside the patient’s body removes waste and excess fluid from the blood. This requires patients to visit a dialysis center several times a week. Each session can be time-consuming. Holly’s approach is different.
It will be surgically implanted inside the body. It will be connected to blood vessels in the pelvis and will continuously work to remove waste from the blood. Healthy kidneys also filter blood day and night. Holly is being designed to function in a similar manner.
Currently, patients undergoing dialysis must visit the dialysis center two or three times a week, depending on their needs. This can impact their work, travel, and other daily activities. While Holly can remain inside the body and filter blood throughout the day, a bedside system can be used as needed at night to remove excess water from the body. If this technology proves safe and effective, it could make it easier for patients to work, travel, and continue their normal activities during the day.
The benefits of Holly go beyond simply eliminating frequent visits to the dialysis center. If successful, it could also be helpful for patients awaiting kidney transplantation. Holly could help support kidney function until the transplant is complete. In the future, it could also be used for patients who cannot receive a kidney transplant. However, the results of human trials will be awaited.
Kidney disease and kidney failure are on the rise in India. At the same time, dialysis and kidney transplant facilities are not easily accessible to every patient. In such a situation, a continuously functioning artificial kidney system within the body could help reduce the pressure on dialysis centers and make kidney replacement treatment more readily available.
