Counting is underway for the assembly elections held in four states and one union territory (Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Kerala). The BJP is headed for a landslide victory in West Bengal. Election Commission trends show the BJP leading in over 190 seats, while the TMC has yet to cross 100. Meanwhile, chants of “Jai Shri Ram” have been heard outside Mamata Banerjee’s home. There are also reports of vandalism outside the TMC office in Asansol. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has sought an appointment with the Governor and may resign as Chief Minister today. TVK has emerged as the largest party in Tamil Nadu. Thalapathy Vijay’s father has stated that his party, TVK, may form an alliance with the Congress. Chief Minister MK Stalin in Tamil Nadu and Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi in Assam have suffered crushing defeats in their respective seats.
The BJP is making a comeback in Assam under the leadership of Himanta Biswa Sarma. Trends in Kerala indicate a significant victory for the Congress-UDF alliance. A day before the Assembly election results, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan removed “CM” from his bio. In Tamil Nadu, the TVK has emerged as the largest party, while the DMK is showing signs of losing power.
Elections in the three electoral states of West Bengal, Assam, and Kerala were expected to be highly contested. However, in Kerala, the Congress-led UDF alliance is returning to power. While a close contest between the BJP and Congress was predicted in Assam, the Election Commission results indicate that the BJP is moving towards a two-thirds majority in Assam. In Puducherry, BJP alliance has got 18 seats, Congress alliance has got 6 seats and others have got 6 seats. In West Bengal, which is witnessing the most exciting contest, BJP has got 204 seats and TMC has got 83 seats. This time Congress has also opened its account with two seats, and Left has also got two seats.
