Have you noticed that even when your phone doesn’t have a SIM or network, you can still make emergency calls? This raises the question: what technology is in our phones that allows us to call select emergency numbers even without a SIM or network?
The main reason for this is the Universal Emergency Protocol and network sharing rules. When your phone doesn’t have a network or SIM, the phone’s hardware connects to any nearby mobile tower. Furthermore, telecom regulations require every operator to prioritize emergency calls. Therefore, calls to emergency numbers can be made even without a SIM or network.
When your phone doesn’t have a SIM or network, your phone connects to any nearby mobile tower for emergency calls.
Legally, every telecom operator is required to pass on any call made to an emergency number by any user.
Additionally, emergency calls are handled directly by the phone’s internal antenna and hardware, rather than the SIM.
Even if network traffic is full, the system cuts off normal calls to make room for emergency calls.
When a user calls an emergency number from their phone, the phone’s AML feature, or Advanced Mobile Location system, automatically activates in the background.
Works without internet or GPS: Upon making an emergency call, the phone’s Advanced Mobile Location (AML) system automatically activates in the background.
This system determines your location using nearby towers and Wi-Fi signals.
The phone sends your location data to the control room associated with the emergency number, so that help can reach you without delay.
It’s worth noting that without a SIM or network, your phone requires at least one nearby tower to make an emergency call. If you’re in a remote area with no nearby towers, your phone won’t be able to make an emergency call.
In such situations, the Satellite Emergency feature comes in handy. This technology connects the phone directly to satellites in space instead of a tower.
With this feature, you can send text messages and your live GPS location to the control room and your loved ones even without a cellular signal.
