You’ve probably often heard that kidney stone patients shouldn’t eat tomatoes. It’s a common belief that consuming tomato seeds increases the risk of kidney stones. This is why people avoid tomatoes altogether. But can eating tomato seeds really cause kidney stones?
The reason for this misconception is that tomatoes contain a substance called oxalate. The most common type of kidney stone is calcium oxalate, so people assume that tomatoes directly cause stone formation, but the truth is quite different.
Experts say that kidney stones aren’t caused solely by eating tomatoes; many dietary and lifestyle factors are responsible for this. Spinach, beets, and some nuts can have higher oxalate levels than tomatoes, so blaming tomatoes alone isn’t correct.
According to experts, tomatoes contain very low levels of oxalate. Eating tomatoes in normal amounts does not increase the risk of kidney stones. Therefore, there is no need to avoid tomatoes or their seeds simply because of this fear, especially if your diet is balanced and your doctor has not given you any specific advice.
Urologist Dr. Vishwas says that some foods contain much higher levels of oxalate than tomatoes. For example, spinach, beets, certain types of nuts, and dried fruits contain high levels of oxalate.
People who frequently develop calcium oxalate kidney stones may need to monitor their intake of these foods as advised by a doctor or dietitian.
However, this does not mean that these nutritious foods should be completely avoided. They also contain many essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Therefore, it is not advisable to completely eliminate any food from your diet without consulting a doctor.
According to Urologist Dr. Vishwas, the most important thing to prevent kidney stones is to drink adequate amount of water. Apart from this, a balanced diet, intake of calcium as per requirement, keeping the amount of salt and excessively processed food low is also considered beneficial.
