After the defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections, Mamata Banerjee’s troubles show no signs of abating. Her party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), is on the verge of collapse. First, 60 TMC MLAs rebelled, and now it is reported that 20 TMC MPs are in contact with the BJP.
Sources indicate that 20 TMC MPs are considering switching sides and are in contact with the BJP. Sources also say that high-level discussions are underway among TMC MPs, and they have expressed their desire to leave the TMC and join the BJP.
If this happens, Mamata Banerjee will face a major setback in Parliament after the Assembly elections. The TMC has a total of 41 MPs in Parliament, 28 in the Lok Sabha and 13 in the Rajya Sabha.
If the party splits in Parliament, it will be a major blow to Mamata Banerjee, as her party is the second largest in Parliament from the Indian Bloc. This split in the TMC will be a major blow not only to Mamata Banerjee but also to the opposition in Parliament.
The TMC has already split in the Bengal Assembly. On Wednesday, 60 rebel MLAs elected Ritabrata Banerjee as the Leader of the Opposition. The Assembly Speaker also approved Ritabrata Banerjee as the Leader of the Opposition. The rebels have also staked their claim to be the “real Trinamool.”
Rumblings of rebellion within the TMC began after the Bengal election results. A faction of the party has been openly questioning Mamata Banerjee and her government’s handling of corruption and the RG Tax rape-murder case. Furthermore, several rebel MLAs attended a meeting with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari last week.
Party sources say that further splits are possible in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha in the coming days. If this happens, the rebel faction’s position will be strengthened.
Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee is now fully focused on trying to save the party’s name and symbol. Given the situation in Maharashtra, this task appears difficult.
Following the electoral defeat, the party split, the loss of the Leader of the Opposition post, and the resignation of leaders like Firhad Hakim have put considerable pressure on Mamata Banerjee. Mamata Banerjee is now struggling to maintain control of her party.
