The US Congress has dealt a blow to President Donald Trump regarding the war between the US and Iran. The US House of Representatives has passed a resolution related to war powers, limiting US military action. This resolution is being considered a challenge to President Trump, as some of Trump’s Republican lawmakers supported the Democrats on this issue.
Notably, the lower house on Wednesday approved a resolution restricting President Donald Trump’s military authority in the event of a war with Iran, and also strongly reprimanded the management. The resolution passed in the US Congress by a narrow vote of 215-208. This decision came after Republican Representatives Thomas Massie, Brian Fitzpatrick, Tom Barrett, and Warren Davidson, going against party lines, supported the Democrats’ move.
This change comes after repeated attempts by Democrats to limit Trump’s war powers in both houses of Congress. This movement is increasingly gaining Republican support. The War Powers Resolution reflects the conflict within the legislature over the administration’s policies. House Speaker Mike Johnson made numerous attempts to block the resolution, but was unsuccessful. The resolution passed amid opposition. President Trump has the power to veto the bill.
In addition, Senate Republicans officially blocked funding for Trump’s ballroom security during negotiations on the immigration package on Wednesday, determining it violated spending rules. The legislation was introduced by New York Democrat Gregory Meeks, ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Meeks said after the proceedings, “I’m very happy that we got some members on the Republican side to stand up. I’m really happy and proud of my Democratic colleagues because every single Democrat voted for it.”
He added, “We will continue to fulfill our constitutional responsibilities, and that’s what we’re doing.” We will continue to act as a check and balance when the administration fails to uphold the Constitution. The floor vote was originally scheduled for May 21st, but Republican leadership abruptly halted it due to the risk of immediate defeat due to high absenteeism.
American media outlet CBS News reported that senators approved the resolution to remove the resolution from committee by a 50-47 vote, with four Republicans joining most Democrats in supporting the decision. Significantly, this was the eighth attempt by Senate Democrats to pass such a resolution.
Introduced by Democratic Senator Tim Kaine, the resolution would direct the President to “withdraw United States Armed Forces from hostilities within or against Iran, unless expressly authorized by a declaration of war or a specific authorization for the use of military force.”
According to CBS News, the four Republican senators who voted with the Democrats were Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Rand Paul, and Bill Cassidy. Reacting to this development, Senator Adam Schiff, a Democrat from California, said that Senate Democrats have once again forced a vote to demand an end to this “unconstitutional war.”
Posting on the social media platform “X,” Schiff wrote, “Today, Senate Democrats once again forced a vote to demand an end to this unconstitutional war. After seven failed attempts, I am grateful that my Republican colleagues have joined us in bringing our War Powers Resolution to the floor and fulfilling our constitutional responsibility to declare war.” Senator Bernie Sanders also welcomed the resolution, saying that the American people are against “spending billions of dollars on endless wars.”
He said in a post on “X” that finally, Senate Republicans are starting to listen to their voters. The American people don’t want to spend billions on never-ending wars. They want to solve the major crises facing our country. We must end this unconstitutional war. This comes after the ongoing talks between the US and Iran regarding a peace deal, following which President Donald Trump announced to stop the ‘planned attack’ on Tehran after the appeal of Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Trump further said that he is ready for a ‘full-scale, massive attack’ on Iran.
