However, doctors advise that if this problem occurs daily, it shouldn’t be dismissed as simply fatigue from a heavy meal.
Dr. V. Mohan, a renowned Indian diabetologist, posted on social media about this. In his post, he explained that fatigue after eating can be a sign of how our body is processing food, how hormones are being balanced, and how blood sugar levels are being controlled. He explains that it’s normal to feel a slight relaxation after eating, but if you experience excessive sleepiness, fatigue, or difficulty concentrating after eating every day, it could be a warning sign. This indicates that blood sugar levels are not being properly regulated in the body.
There’s a natural reason for feeling sleepy after eating. The body sends more blood to the stomach and intestines after a meal to speed up the digestive process. Consequently, blood flow to the brain may be temporarily reduced, leading to a feeling of drowsiness. Doctors also advise avoiding strenuous work or exercise immediately after a heavy meal. Changes in blood flow during this time can increase chest pain, especially in heart patients.
Eating too much or eating the wrong kinds of food also contributes to this problem. Eating large amounts of food, especially foods rich in refined carbohydrates like white rice, sweets, or fried foods, can cause a rapid increase in blood sugar. The body then releases insulin, which causes a sudden drop in blood sugar levels, leaving one feeling tired, weak, or sleepy. If this happens every time you eat, it could be an early sign of prediabetes or diabetes. Frequent drops in energy levels indicate that the body’s sugar levels are not stable.
However, some simple lifestyle changes can help avoid this problem. Eating smaller meals, including protein and vegetables in the diet, and reducing sweet and refined foods can prove to be very beneficial. Furthermore, taking a short walk after meals also helps control blood sugar. Staying active regularly, getting adequate sleep, and maintaining a healthy weight play an important role in balancing the body’s energy levels.
