It often happens that the eye or eyelid suddenly starts twitching. Many people associate this with good or bad omens, while others consider it a sign of a health problem. The truth is that in most cases, eye twitching isn’t a serious illness. However, if it occurs repeatedly or persists for a long time, there may be some medical reasons behind it.
According to a report by fortishealthcare, eye twitching is an involuntary movement of the eye, eyelids, or muscles around the eyes. It can take many forms. Sometimes, just the eyelid twitches slightly, or sometimes, the muscles around the eye feel twitching repeatedly. In some cases, it can be so severe that the eye repeatedly closes.

According to experts, stress and lack of sleep are among the most common causes of eye twitching. When the body doesn’t get enough rest or a person is under mental stress, the eyelid muscles can start to spasm. Furthermore, looking at mobile phones, laptops, or other digital screens for long periods of time increases eye strain, which can also lead to this problem.

Excessive consumption of coffee, tea, energy drinks, or alcohol can also cause eye twitching. Muscle spasms and tremors can also occur due to a deficiency in essential minerals like magnesium and potassium. Allergies, dryness, or irritation in the eyes can also cause frequent eyelid twitching. There are many beliefs prevalent in Indian society regarding eye twitching. It is believed that a woman’s left eye twitching is auspicious, while a woman’s right eye twitching is inauspicious. However, these beliefs have no scientific basis. Experts say that eye twitching is mostly due to physiological or lifestyle factors, not a sign of the future.

However, if eye twitching persists for several days, the eye closes completely, tremors are felt in other parts of the face, or any other unusual symptoms appear, you should consult a doctor. In rare cases, it may be associated with blepharospasm, hemifacial spasm, multiple sclerosis, or other neurological problems. To avoid eye twitching, get enough sleep, try to reduce stress, limit screen time, and eat a balanced diet. In most cases, these small habits help resolve the problem.
