During the scorching heat, the biggest concern isn’t the heat, but the monthly electricity bill. In fact, everything from coolers to ACs runs day and night, making it natural for bills to rise. However, if you install solar panels on your rooftop under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, your bill can be zero even after running all appliances, including ACs and coolers.
You can install solar panels at home under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana. You must be an Indian citizen, have your own roof, and have an electricity connection. Anyone who meets these basic requirements can install solar panels under this scheme. First:
Go to pmsuryaghar.gov.in and register. You must provide your state, electricity distribution company (DISCOM), consumer number, and mobile number. You can also provide your email address during registration.
Log in with your consumer number and mobile number and click on the Rooftop Solar option to fill out the form.
After this, wait for approval from the Discom and install solar panels at your home from a registered vendor available on the portal.
After installation, you will need to provide complete plant details on the portal. With this, you can apply for net metering.
The Discom will then conduct a physical inspection of the solar plant. After the net meter is installed, a ‘Commissioning Certificate’ will be generated on the portal.
After gaining access to the commissioning portal, you will need to upload your bank account details and a cancelled check.
The subsidy amount will then be credited to your account within 30 days.
If you install solar panels without subsidy, the bill per kilowatt is between ₹60,000 and ₹80,000. However, under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, 40% to 60% of this cost is subsidized by the government.
The government has created three sections for this. If you install a 1kW system, the government provides a subsidy of up to ₹30,000.
For a 2kW plant, a subsidy of up to ₹60,000 is provided.
For a 3kW or larger plant, the maximum subsidy is ₹78,000. This means you won’t receive more than ₹78,000 in subsidy.
It’s worth noting that some state governments, such as Uttar Pradesh, provide separate subsidies in addition to the central government’s subsidy. In Uttar Pradesh, this amount is ₹30,000. Therefore, if you live in Uttar Pradesh, you can receive a subsidy of approximately ₹108,000.
If you install a 3kW plant, your expenses will be approximately ₹180,000. Let’s assume you live in a state where there’s no separate subsidy, but even after the central government subsidy, you’ll still have to spend a total of ₹108,000.
Even if electricity costs ₹8 per unit, this system will generate 250 to 300 units of electricity per month. This will save you ₹2,200 per month and approximately ₹26,400 per year. It will take you about 4 years to recoup your costs. After that, you’ll be able to enjoy completely free electricity for the next 20 years.
