Amit Shah arrived in Kolkata today as the central observer to select the West Bengal Legislative Party leader. Suvendu Adhikari was unanimously elected as the leader of the BJP Legislative Party at the meeting held to select the leader. Following the announcement of Suvendu Adhikari’s name as the leader of the West Bengal BJP Legislative Party by Central Observer Amit Shah, Suvendu Adhikari will be sworn in as the Chief Minister of West Bengal tomorrow.
Suvendu Adhikari will officially become the Chief Minister of West Bengal tomorrow, May 9th, after being sworn in. However, the unofficial beginning of his term began in 2020, when he left the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Subsequently, in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, he defeated TMC leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from Nandigram, signaling that he holds the potential for a future Chief Minister of West Bengal. And today, with his election as leader of the West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party Legislative Party, the seed of a future Chief Minister within him has blossomed. Suvendu Adhikari was born on December 15, 1970 in a noble Brahmin family. His father, Shishir Adhikari, was a former Union Minister. Suvendu Adhikari inherited politics. He has traveled from the Panchayat to Parliament, and now he will occupy the Chief Minister’s chair. He first became an MLA in 2005. Subsequently, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Tamluk in 2009 and again in 2014. His role in the anti-land acquisition movement in Nandigram made him the “King of Medinipur” in Bengal politics. In December 2020, he left the Trinamool Congress and joined the BJP. In the 2021 assembly elections, he surprised everyone by defeating Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from the Nandigram seat. He then served as the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from May 2021 to 2026. He will now hold the top position in West Bengal.
Suvendu Adhikari began his political career winning elections when he was elected as a councilor of the Contai Municipality from the Congress party in 1995. Consequently, he has attained the position of Chief Minister after nearly three decades, from 1995 to 2026. Suvendu Adhikari has two brothers in his family. Dibyendu Adhikari has served as a Member of Parliament and MLA from Tamluk. His other brother, Soumendra Adhikari, has served as the Chairman of the Contai Municipality and is currently the Member of Parliament from Contai. Adhikari is unmarried. His mother, Gayatri Adhikari, has dedicated her life to social and political work. Suvendu Adhikari will be sworn in as Chief Minister on Saturday (May 9) at 11 am.
