Oral polio vaccine causing paralysis in kids: Study
The Health ministry must provide an answer to the public regarding why the Polio Vaccine is being administered again, despite its negative reports in history.
NewIndianExpress, 23 October 2019: At least 400 children in India have developed polio after receiving the oral polio vaccine (OPV) over the past five years, a top Indian paediatrician has revealed in a just-published scientific paper that questions the ethics of the continued use of OPV.
T Jacob John, who has earlier advised the World Health Organisation and the Indian government on polio eradication policies, has described the continued use of OPV as an “ethical anomaly” that is causing avoidable polio to children.
India has been free from wild polio virus since 2011, but the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has never released data on vaccine-associated polio paralysis (VAPP), adverse effect of OPV that causes infantile paralysis.
All children under 6 in the country have been receiving multiple doses of OPV — that contain live polio viruses — since 1994, through pulse polio programme while the government also launched injectible polio virus schedule for children in 2015.
John challenged the current policy saying the government has continued with OPV because “it’s easy and commercially more viable”. “For the sake of convenience, ethical issues have been ignored by several poor countries like India; the existing programme needs to be reviewed,” added John, an emeritus professor at Christian Medical College, Vellore.
He has published the analysis jointly with Mumbai-based paediatrician Dhanya Dharmpalan in the Indian Journal of Ethical Issues. John has pointed out that in nearly 40 countries, governments had long stopped OPV due to risk of polio associated with it.
In the OPV given to children worldwide, Type 2 vaccine viruses was withdrawn from use in 2016; it continues to contain Type 1 and 3 strains of viruses that can cause VAPP. Children in India are given two intradermal fractional doses of IPV at 14 weeks and 6 years in lieu of the recommended one full dose intramuscular IPV at 14 weeks.
The paper has highlighted that in last five years, globally, cases of polio caused by vaccine viruses have outnumbered those of polio caused by wild polio viruses.
Top officials in the health ministry, however, said the benefits attached with OPV far outweighed the risks. “We have relied on OPV because of the results it has shown in last 25 years in eradicating wild polio,” said an official. “Moreover, we have following WHO guidelines on the polio eradication programme and do not have the technical expertise to go beyond its recommendation.”
Another official said unless neighbouring countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan stopped reporting cases of wild polio, it would be difficult to withdraw OPV from India.
Gates’ and Polio
The Gates Foundation is the topmost funder of polio initiatives worldwide. In April 2013, Bill Gates said [a] that eradicating polio was his “top priority,” — even though there had only been 19 cases worldwide that entire year at that point.

Since Gates made that commitment, billions of dollars worldwide have been poured into the cause.
The Gates Foundation is one of several partners in the GPEI public-private partnership that also includes the WHO, UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Gavi and Rotary International.

How A Vaccination Can Cause Polio: Mechanism of Injury-Provoked Poliomyelitis
Polio is an enterovirus, and it’s not the only enterovirus capable of causing paralysis. Enteroviruses are fairly common, most people who become infected have no or few symptoms. If symptoms develop, they are like a cold or mild flu. One enterovirus that has been in the news lately is called “EV-D68” which can cause polio-like paralysis they call “acute flaccid myelitis (AFM)”. CDC acknowledges this.
What turns an asymptomatic or low-symptom harmless enterovirus infection into an ER visit and hospitalization? In 1995, researchers figured out that with the polio enterovirus, it was intramuscular injections within 30 days of being given a live polio vaccine. They were studying cases of “provocation” poliomyelitis following receipt of live polio vaccine.
Like other enteroviruses, 95% of polio infections are asymptomatic or very mild. Polio only very rarely leads to paralysis. Researchers in 1998 stated: “Muscle injury due to injection of vaccines or therapeutic agents is common in medical practice. It has been observed that, if concurrent with PV infection, such injury may increase the risk of neurological complications.”
PV is polio virus, but as noted above, other commonly circulated enteroviruses can lead to paralysis.
With children today being given so many intramuscular injections so often throughout childhood, odds are a seemingly well child will actually be infected with (and successfully fighting) an enterovirus when given a round of vaccines.
And with the ACIP dangerously telling pediatricians it’s OK to vaccinate mildly ill children, those who have earaches or are on antibiotics, the odds increase that a child infected with an enterovirus will be given a round of vaccines, possibly leading to AFM.
Steps include not vaccinating anyone when they are ill or on antibiotics, and screening non-symptomatic children for enteroviruses before vaccinating. There are solutions, but 10-minute “well-child” visits and the financial drive to adhere to the CDC schedule makes solutions inconvenient. Lives are sacrificed for the sake of fast patient turnover, convenience, and insurance reimbursement.
This is but one example of why the entire vaccine industry and policies need to be reformed. First Do No Harm.

Skeletal muscle injury is known to predispose its sufferers to neurological complications of concurrent poliovirus infections. This phenomenon, labeled “provocation poliomyelitis,” continues to cause numerous cases of childhood paralysis due to the administration of unnecessary injections to children in areas where poliovirus is endemic. Recently, it has been reported that intramuscular injections may also increase the likelihood of vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis in recipients of live attenuated poliovirus vaccines. We have studied this important risk factor for paralytic polio in an animal system for poliomyelitis and have determined the pathogenic mechanism linking intramuscular injections and provocation poliomyelitis. Skeletal muscle injury induces retrograde axonal transport of poliovirus and thereby facilitates viral invasion of the central nervous system and the progression of spinal cord damage. The pathogenic mechanism of provocation poliomyelitis may differ from that of polio acquired in the absence of predisposing factors.
7 Kids in Africa left PARALYZED by vaccine-derived polio bankrolled by Gates Foundation
Health officials in two African nations announced that seven children were left paralyzed by vaccine-derived polio linked to the novel oral poliomyelitis vaccine type 2 (nOPV2).
Health authorities from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Burundi, alongside the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), confirmed the cases on March 16 [f]. The circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) was detected “from the stool samples of seven children with acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) – six in DRC … and one in Burundi,” the GPEI said. Aside from the seven children, the VDP virus was also found in five environmental samples from the Bujumbura Mairie province in Burundi.

These outbreaks reportedly began in the DRC’s Tangyanika and South Kivu provinces. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) said Burundi had already declared a national emergency following eight cases and five wastewater samples testing positive for cVDPV2.
The oral polio vaccines (OPVs) – administered in much of Africa, the Middle East and parts of Asia – contain a live-but-weakened form of the polio virus modified to minimize its ability to paralyze. However, the attenuated virus in the live oral vaccine strains can revert to virulence, circulate, infect and paralyze “in places with low immunization rates” over the course o 12 to 18 months.
“Vaccine of choice” for polio ironically spreading the disease
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), one of GPEI’s partners, funded the development and clinical trials for nOPV2. “We are disappointed [g]. Any such outbreak is disappointing,” lamented Dr. Ananda Bandyopadhyay, deputy director for technology, research and analytics on the BMGF’s polio team.

These children now have to deal with paralysis, feeding tubes, and the loss of their ability to speak on a daily basis.
