The resignation of the Union Education Minister, following the Jantar Mantar protest, became not just an anti-government issue for the opposition but also a signal for the upcoming elections. The opposition has long been attacking the government over unemployment, the recruitment process, and the examination system, but this protest brought these issues to the fore as a major youth discontent.
The Congress and India Block parties can now use this as a narrative that questions related to examination reforms, employment, and the future of youth are not limited to students but are major political issues related to government accountability.
The protest also sent a message to the opposition that if voices emanating from social media reach the ground, pressure can be exerted on the government. Rahul Gandhi’s role in the entire movement was also discussed. Initially, he did not directly participate in the Jantar Mantar protest.
However, he continued to corner the government on campaigns related to the Congress student organization and youth issues. As the movement grew, Rahul Gandhi began linking it to the opposition’s larger political fight. The march to the Prime Minister’s residence and the presence of opposition leaders at the protest gave the movement a national political message.
SP chief Akhilesh Yadav’s involvement in the movement was also politically significant.
With the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections in mind, Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav’s joint stand on youth issues sends a message of opposition unity. SP MPs led by Dimple Yadav marched from Parliament to Jantar Mantar on July 20th and were also detained. Dimple Yadav has maintained constant contact with the protesting students. The SP has long been raising issues like employment and recruitment. This movement could provide the opposition with an opportunity to establish a new narrative against the BJP in Uttar Pradesh politics.
Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi described the student movement as a victory for India’s future. He said on Saturday that this fight is between the past and the future, and that India’s future will defeat the past. The government must take concrete steps to transform the education system. Rahul said that two other demands of the students should not be forgotten. Action should be taken against those who attacked the protesters and those who orchestrated the attack. As a second demand, he stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should apologize to the students.
Blaming Minister Amit Shah for the violence, Rahul Gandhi alleged that he approved the action against the students. “We hold Amit Shah directly responsible for the violence against the students. He authorized the firing on the students and the use of weapons like pellet guns. This action against the students is unacceptable.”
