Political rhetoric intensified over Rahul Gandhi’s mimicry of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the “Chhatraon Ki Goonj” program in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, on Saturday. BJP leaders strongly objected to Rahul Gandhi’s imitation, calling it a poor political display. Meanwhile, Congress, TMC, and Aam Aadmi Party leaders defended Rahul Gandhi, calling it a matter of right.
The issue came to light when Rahul Gandhi was interacting with students. During this time, a war of words erupted between politicians imitating Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Union Minister Piyush Goyal criticized Rahul Gandhi for his mimicry. He said on the social media platform X that such a performance on a political platform, using Prime Minister Modi’s name, was shocking. Calling it “cheap political theater,” Goyal said it was beyond comprehension why Rahul Gandhi felt the need to repeatedly perform political demonstrations using the Prime Minister’s name. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also took a dig at Rahul Gandhi. He said that stand-up comedy could be an option for Rahul Gandhi. Speaking to a news agency, Fadnavis said that if Rahul Gandhi engaged in mimicry as a stand-up comedian, he could find good employment. He also targeted Rahul Gandhi regarding the political situation of the Congress.
BJP leaders’ objections to Rahul Gandhi’s program were not limited to his mimicry of the Prime Minister. Some leaders alleged that comments made about Prime Minister Modi’s late mother were mocked during the program. Union Education Minister Prahlad Joshi reacted strongly to this. He wrote on X that using the platform of a conversation with students to mock the Prime Minister’s late mother raises questions about political and human sensitivity.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also attacked Rahul Gandhi and the Congress on this issue. He said that mothers should not be made a political subject. Dhami said that political opposition is in its place, but joking about comments related to someone’s mother is inappropriate.
Following the BJP’s attacks, Congress leaders defended Rahul Gandhi. Congress leader Rashid Alvi said that Rahul Gandhi was merely mimicking and should not be seen in any other sense. Speaking to ANI, Alvi said that Rahul Gandhi was not the only one laughing, but that people present at the event were also laughing. He reminded the BJP of past comments made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding Congress leader Sonia Gandhi. Alvi questioned that if there is objection to any comments related to women, then the reactions of women should also be taken into account. He said that the BJP should also remember Prime Minister Modi’s comments regarding Sonia Gandhi. According to her, what happened at Rahul Gandhi’s event was mimicry and should be viewed in that context.
Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra also supported Rahul Gandhi. She wrote on X that this was not cheap humor or immature behavior. Moitra linked it to the long-standing need to openly imitate the Prime Minister and engage in political satire. She said that mocking the Prime Minister in a sarcastic manner is part of a democratic right. Following her statement, the controversy appeared to take on a political tone. BJP leaders compared it to an insult to the Prime Minister and his late mother, while opposition leaders called it a matter of political expression and democratic rights.
Aam Aadmi Party leader Saurabh Bhardwaj also hit back at the BJP, defending Rahul Gandhi. He said that BJP leaders have previously made several comments about Rahul Gandhi, his family, and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Speaking to ANI, Bhardwaj said that before talking about respect and dignity, the BJP should first examine the political language it has used with other leaders. He said that if the BJP talks about respect, it should show the same respect to others.
Rahul Gandhi’s mimicry at the Indore event has now become a political debate between the BJP and the opposition. BJP leaders have linked it to insulting the Prime Minister and political decorum. Meanwhile, Congress, TMC and AAP leaders have termed it as political satire and a part of democratic expression. Leaders from both sides have presented their arguments in this entire controversy. The BJP has raised questions about Rahul Gandhi’s performance and the reference to the Prime Minister’s late mother, while opposition leaders have accused the BJP of adopting double standards.
