TRAI, the agency that regulates the telecom sector in India, has taken the strictest action yet against those making spam calls and messages.
TRAI has issued a new notification clearly ordering all telecom companies like Jio, Airtel, and Vi to use AI (Artificial Intelligence) to track spam calls themselves. The most interesting thing is that now you won’t even need to complain about a fake number. The AI ​​will automatically detect the spammer, and the company will immediately disconnect the connection.

Often, fed up with spam calls, we simply hang up or block the number, but very few file an official complaint. Taking advantage of this, spam callers continually call from new numbers.
But under TRAI’s new Third Amendment Regulation, the entire system has changed. Now, if a telecom company’s AI or machine learning system identifies a number as “suspected spam,” the company must take immediate action without waiting for a customer complaint. This means that AI will now act as your bodyguard and stop these fake calls.
TRAI’s new framework has kept the timeline very tight so that spammers don’t have a chance to escape. As soon as a network’s AI system receives a suspicious call, it must provide complete information to the network from which the call originated within 2 hours. The company that owns the SIM will then have to find the person’s KYC data within one working day and share it with all other telecom companies.
Not only this, all companies will check which other SIM cards have been activated using the spammer’s KYC in the last 10 days.
If the investigation reveals that five or more spam calls have been made from different numbers linked to the KYC of a single person or company in the last 10 days, strict action will be taken against them. TRAI has clearly stated that in such cases, not only will the SIM card from which the call was made be deactivated, but all phone connections in the name of that spammer will also be immediately banned.
TRAI has made the penalty rules so strict that anyone will think twice before making a spam call. If the AI ​​system detects someone spamming for the first time, all outgoing services on all SIM cards or telecom resources in that person’s name will be completely banned for 15 days.
If the person repeats the same behavior, all their SIM cards, PRI lines, and internet connections will be disconnected for one year. They will also be blacklisted for a full year, preventing them from purchasing a new SIM card from any company in the country for one year.
Most young people nowadays use Truecaller or calling management apps on their phones. However, TRAI’s new rules have issued guidelines for these apps as well. Now, any app like Truecaller will not be able to arbitrarily tag special number series (such as numbers starting with 160) designated by the government or telecom authorities as spam or block them. These number series are reserved for government and official commercial calls. However, if a user wishes to block a number on their personal phone, they will have complete freedom to do so.

Now you will have to send an SMS to 1909 by typing BLOCK PROMO from your phone. By doing this, all types of commercial and promotional calls to your number will be completely blocked. But keep in mind, this will not stop your bank OTP, transactional messages, and government notifications. They will continue to reach you securely as before.
