After losing the West Bengal elections, Mamata Banerjee’s downfall began. First, Trinamool MLAs rebelled, then several MPs and councilors deserted her, and now, her fellow leaders are facing corruption charges.
One such corruption case involves Debraj Chakraborty, a former councilor of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation in West Bengal and a Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader. After leaving the Congress and joining the TMC, his close association with Mamata Banerjee’s nephew and TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee led to a significant increase in his income. It is said that Debraj Chakraborty amassed vast wealth through various forms of corruption, including collecting cut money for Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress. Besides amassing vast wealth through cut money and corruption, he also significantly increased his political influence. He himself became a councilor from Bidhannagar and also got his wife, Geeta Munshi, elected as an MLA. Debraj Chakraborty is currently in custody, and now, the corruption scandal appears to be linked to Mamata Banerjee’s nephew and TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, raising concerns for Banerjee.
The primary case against Debraj Chakraborty involves financial irregularities, extortion, and amassing wealth beyond his known sources of income.
The West Bengal Police’s Special Task Force (STF) arrested him on charges of extortion, intimidation, and financial irregularities and has now begun investigating the scam.
Debraj Chakraborty is allegedly accused of significant financial fraud and “cut-money” (corruption). His assets worth approximately ₹1,300 crore have also been mentioned in this case, and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) is also investigating them.
Following his arrest by the West Bengal Police’s Special Task Force (STF), he was produced in court, where he has been remanded to police custody.
Debraj Chakraborty is facing massive public opposition after being accused of corruption related to cut money collection. While he was being taken to court, local residents protested, shouting slogans and throwing eggs at him.
Regarding Debraj Chakraborty’s political background, he is the husband of former TMC MLA and singer Aditi Munshi. Before becoming a councilor from Bidhannagar, he was a Congress leader. Later, he left the Congress and joined the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress.
