The Supreme Court’s ruling that Aadhaar is not mandatory is a significant victory for privacy advocates. The Aadhaar system, initially introduced as a means to provide government services to citizens more efficiently, had gradually become a tool for mass surveillance and an invasion of privacy. People were becoming increasingly concerned about the mandatory requirement of linking Aadhaar to various services, including banking, telecom, and even school admissions.
By declaring Aadhaar not mandatory, the Supreme Court has granted relief to millions of individuals who were subjected to coercion and undue pressure to surrender their personal data. This judgment restores the rights of individuals to decide whether or not they want to share their Aadhaar information for availing of services provided by private players. It empowers citizens to reclaim their autonomy and protects their fundamental right to privacy.
Senior Advocate Prashant Bhushan: The Champion of Privacy Rights
Senior Advocate Bhushan welcomed the Supreme Court’s order, recognizing it as a historic judgment that would bring relief to the common man. He has long argued that forcing individuals to part with their personal data for private services violates their fundamental rights. Bhushan’s expertise and relentless pursuit of justice have played a crucial role in shaping this landmark decision by the court.
Securing the Common Man’s Privacy
With the ruling that Aadhaar is not mandatory, the Supreme Court has taken a crucial step in securing the privacy of the common man. Now, individuals can exercise their right to choose whether to share their personal data, knowing that their privacy will be safeguarded. This decision ensures that private players cannot force individuals to disclose their sensitive information, protecting them from potential misuse and data breaches.
