Most people believe that breast cancer is diagnosed solely by a lump in the breast, but many health experts say that in many cases, early signs can also appear on the skin. According to a recently published report, breast cancer is first detected by changes in the skin in about 10 percent of patients.

Doctors advise that if sudden changes in the breast skin appear and persist for a long time, they should not be ignored. Such symptoms may include redness or darkening of the skin, persistent rashes, swelling, a feeling of warmth, orange-peel-like pitting, and inward-turning nipples. Experts say that these changes are not always a sign of cancer, but if the problem persists, it is important to consult a doctor.

According to reports, inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) is a rare but rapidly spreading form of breast cancer. It accounts for approximately 1% to 5% of all breast cancer cases. Fortunately, it doesn’t always form lumps, so it’s often not readily visible on a mammogram. Many patients initially present to their doctor with symptoms such as redness, swelling, or eczema. In such cases, proper diagnosis is crucial.

Radiation and other therapies used to treat breast cancer can also affect the skin, hair, and nails. Radiation can cause skin irritation, itching, redness, swelling, and discoloration. In severe cases, skin peeling may also occur.

Hair loss during chemotherapy is considered one of the biggest concerns for patients. Health experts say that for many, hair is not just a beauty product but a part of their identity.

If you notice a new rash, redness, swelling, change in the nipple or any problem in the breast skin that does not get cured in a few days, then consult a doctor immediately. Experts say that breast cancer does not always appear in the form of a lump, hence it is important to pay attention to the signs visible on the skin also.
