Understanding and Addressing Unauthorized Loan Activations on HDFC Bank Credit Cards
There are numerous customer complaints about HDFC Bank apparently activating or disbursing pre-approved loans (like Insta Loan or Insta Jumbo Loan) on credit cards without explicit or informed consent. These cases have increased in recent years, especially in 2024–2025, across forums, complaint portals, and social media.
Customers often report:
Some HDFC Bank credit card users have reported:
- Automatic loan activation (like EasyEMI or InstaLoan) without consent.
- If a customer’s purchased amount was converted to an EMI (Equated Monthly Installment) without their consent, it constitutes a violation of consumer rights and potentially a fraudulent practice.
- Loans (₹4000 – ₹50,000+) are being disbursed into accounts without explicit approval.
- Interest charges are applied even when the customer did not avail of the loan.
- No prior SMS/email explicitly stating “loan approval requires this OTP”.
Here’s what the customer should do:
HDFC should never disburse loans automatically without any customer action — RBI rules prohibit that. HDFC blames the customer that – The “trigger” is almost always the customer sharing OTP(s) during a call or online session. Sharing an OTP = digital consent in banking systems, even if the customer didn’t realize what it was for.
Why This Happens (Mis-Selling Tactics)
- Aggressive sales targets lead some reps to downplay or hide that OTPs are for loan activation.
- Call recordings often exist, but customers rarely get access unless escalated to RBI/Ombudsman.
- It’s not a “system glitch” — it’s deliberate mis-selling in many cases.

I am deeply concerned about an unauthorized loan created on my HDFC credit card without my consent. The subsequent deduction of processing fees and GST has caused me financial distress and significantly eroded my trust in your institution.C.n. 616724753
Did not expect such unprofessional behaviour from @HDFC_Bank

They charged annual fee on my LTF credit card. When I complained, they agreed to revert but in the process, they started a jumbo loan without my consent and told me this was a technical glitch.
