India-Nepal Border Management, Security, and Vibrant Village Program Works Accelerate in Bihar’s Border Districts
The district administrations of Bihar’s border districts—East Champaran, West Champaran, Madhubani, Sitamarhi, Kishanganj, Supaul, and Araria—shared significant progress reports following a joint review of India-Nepal border management and development works. At a meeting chaired by Bihar Chief Secretary Shri Pratyay Amrit, the District Magistrates of the border districts provided detailed presentations on the current situation.
In order to strengthen border security, an intensive campaign is underway to remove illegal encroachments in the ‘no man’s land’ and within a 15-kilometer radius of the international border. All 186 identified illegal structures have been demolished in Madhubani, while all 34 identified encroachments have been removed in Kishanganj in the past month. In West Champaran, 261 out of 272 encroachments have been removed, and coordination is underway with Nepalese authorities for the remaining.
The administration has also achieved significant success against FICN (Fact Control and Counterfeit Currency Notes). In East Champaran, 10 accused were recently arrested with 18,500 Indian and 2.5 million Nepalese counterfeit notes. Similarly, 4.9 million Nepalese and 20,100 Indian counterfeit notes were recovered in Sitamarhi. In the area of cybersecurity, the Sitamarhi administration secured refunds of over ₹11.66 lakh in January alone. Additionally, several arrests were made in Madhubani and Araria, busting interstate gangs involved in the production of fake identity cards and Aadhaar cards.
Modern technology and joint surveys are being used for the maintenance and verification of border pillars. Regular monitoring of 1,237 pillars in East Champaran and 358 in Madhubani is underway. Field Survey Teams (FSTs) are taking necessary action to repair damaged or missing pillars in Kishanganj and Sitamarhi. In Supaul district, repairs to all damaged pillars have been completed. Security agencies are also closely monitoring illegal infiltration by foreign nationals, with citizens from countries like Uzbekistan, Bangladesh, China, and the United States arrested.
Hundreds of villages have been selected under the Vibrant Village Program-II (VVP-II) for the all-round development of border areas. In Madhubani, DPRs for 253 development plans are being prepared for 36 villages, and the Government of India has added 250 additional villages. Modern facilities such as digital libraries and model agricultural farms are being developed in four blocks of Sitamarhi at a cost of ₹24.66 crore. In Kishanganj, ₹112.53 crore has been allocated for this program. Special emphasis is being placed on the processing of dragon fruit, pineapple, and tea to promote agriculture and horticulture in these areas.
