The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a charge sheet against 11 accused in connection with a terrorist conspiracy hatched by a branch of the banned terrorist organization ‘Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh’ (JMB). In this charge sheet filed in the NIA Special Court in Guwahati, the accused have been charged under various sections of BNS, 2023 and UA(P) Act, 1967.
The NIA investigation had revealed the active role of these accused in the conspiracy of ‘Imam Mahmudar Kafeela’ (IMK). The objective of this conspiracy was to expand the ideology of this terrorist organization in West Bengal and the North-Eastern states of India (including Assam and Tripura).
The conspiracy included promoting the extremist agenda of the terrorist organization, radicalizing easily impressionable youth and expanding the organization’s network in India.
The investigation by the anti-terrorism body revealed that senior JBM member Imam Mahmood Habibullah had formed IMK to carry forward the evil agenda of the banned organization on Indian soil.
The NIA investigation also revealed that the 11 accused named in the charge sheet had conspired to increase the presence of IMK/JBM in India by holding secret meetings, running religiously motivated programs, spreading extremist literature and using digital platforms for anti-India propaganda. They were promoting loyalty to the leadership of IMK/JMB.
Two of the main accused named in the charge sheet have been identified as Naseemuddin and Jagir Mia. It is alleged that Naseemuddin was carrying forward IMK’s activities in Assam and Jagir Miyan was leading the organization in Tripura.
During the investigation, the NIA recovered several documents, electronic devices and digital records which helped in strengthening the case against the accused. Investigation of the matter is ongoing.
