The Department of Telecommunications i.e. DoT has issued a big warning regarding SIM fraud and fraud. Under the new telecom rules, violating the rules can now lead to 3 years of jail and a heavy fine of up to Rs 50 lakh.
DoT has warned people against fraudulently issuing SIMs, misuse of telecom identity and tampering with the IMEI number of the mobile. According to the department, in such cases, under the Telecommunication Act 2023, jail of up to 3 years and a fine of up to Rs 50 lakh can be imposed. This warning of the Department of Telecommunications has come at a time when DoT’s Madhya Pradesh License Service Area has detected a case of fraudulent issuance of SIMs. Cyber crime investigation revealed that a PoS agent from Chhattisgarh had activated 25 mobile connections of people using their identity documents without their knowledge and consent.
After the matter came to light, DoT and telecom companies blacklisted that PoS agent. Now he will not be able to issue mobile connection in the name of any person in future.
Regarding this matter, DoT has advised people not to give the SIM card issued in their name to any other person for use. If the SIM running in your name is used for any wrong purpose then you may also be liable for legal action.
The department says that users should check from time to time how many mobile numbers are active in their name. Sanchar Sathi portal and mobile app can be used for this. Here the user can see all the mobile connections issued in his name. If a number is not recognized or is no longer needed, the process of blocking it can be started.
DoT has also advised people to stay away from certain activities. These include obtaining a SIM using fake documents or identity of another person, giving the SIM in your name to someone else, renting the SIM or allowing it to be used for cyber fraud.
Along with this, one should not use such modem, module, SIM box or other devices whose IMEI number has been changed. Attempting to change the Calling Line Identity (CLI) or other telecom identification number through a mobile app, website or any other means may also be illegal.
