Chaos erupted in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, when eggs were thrown at a march led by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. It is being claimed that some people threw eggs targeting the former Chief Minister. Chaos ensued.
In fact, the TMC had organized a march from Ballygunge Phari to Hazra More. The TMC had organized this march to protest the alleged rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl in Baruipur. As the march progressed, a clash broke out between BJP and TMC workers, which was managed by the police.
Videos surfaced showing eggs being thrown at former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as the TMC march began. Clashes also erupted between BJP and TMC workers. During this time, some people present there also shouted “thief, thief.”
It is reported that intermittent clashes between TMC and BJP workers continued for some distance and culminated at Hazra Crossing near Mamata Banerjee’s residence. Seeing the situation spiraling out of control, the police used mild force. Mamata Banerjee accused the police of acting in a biased manner.
Mamata Banerjee stated that the police cannot provide security to the public and are being used to disrupt the programs of our workers. Banerjee stated that complete anarchy prevails in Bengal and the police are acting like BJP workers. Meanwhile, BJP leaders allege that Trinamool Congress youth wing workers instigated their supporters, leading to clashes during the rally.
It is noteworthy that recently the Calcutta High Court overturned an order issued by the Kolkata Police that denied permission for the protest march. The court granted TMC permission to hold a protest rally with certain conditions.
The court also altered the route of the protest march, directing it to end at Hazra Crossing instead of Lansdowne. The court cited the inconvenience it would cause to the public. The court also ordered the rally to be held from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm, instead of the usual 3 pm start time.
