US President Donald Trump held a crucial meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday, lasting nearly two hours. According to reports, another round of talks between the two leaders is expected before leaving Washington, where major decisions are possible on issues such as the Iran war, trade, technology, and Taiwan.
After the meeting, President Xi Jinping stated that the US and China have agreed on a new bilateral relationship. He stated that this new vision will guide the strategic relationship between the two countries for the next three years.
However, Xi issued a clear warning to the US on the Taiwan issue. He stated that if tensions escalate over Taiwan, it could damage relations between the two countries. He urged the US to exercise extra caution on this issue and emphasized that relations will remain strong only if handled correctly.
At the meeting, both countries also agreed that Iran will not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons. According to the White House, the talks were positive and focused on increasing economic cooperation.
During the discussions, issues such as giving American companies greater access to the Chinese market, increasing Chinese investment in American industries, preventing the smuggling of fentanyl-related chemicals, and increasing trade in agricultural products were also discussed.
In addition, both countries’ concerns regarding the Strait of Hormuz were also raised. They agreed that keeping this route open is crucial for global energy supply and maritime trade. Xi Jinping opposed its militarization and the imposition of any tolls. This meeting is considered an important step towards balancing US-China relations and increasing cooperation on global issues.
The White House has made a significant claim regarding the meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping amid the Iran war. Both the US and China agreed that the Strait of Hormuz should remain open to ensure uninterrupted energy (oil and gas) supplies to the global market. Xi Jinping clearly stated that China opposes the militarization of this sea route and the imposition of any tolls on its use.
China has indicated it may buy more US oil in the future to reduce its dependence on this strategic route. Both countries agreed that Iran will not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons under any circumstances.
