A fierce political dispute is underway between the BJP and the Congress party over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, particularly the Great Nicobar Development Project. The BJP is calling Congress’s opposition anti-national and in favor of China.
Regarding the Great Nicobar Project issue, PM Narendra Modi’s government is building a massive transshipment port, international airport, township, and power plant in Great Nicobar at a cost of ₹92,000 crore. This project is located near the Strait of Malacca, through which 80% of China’s oil passes. It will help India monitor China’s growing activities in the Indian Ocean and strengthen its naval power. The project is planned to clear over 160 square kilometers of pristine rainforest, which is claimed to threaten the ecology and local tribal communities (especially the Shompen tribe).
In this matter, the BJP is upset with the Congress for the following actions:-
(China’s agent claim) Rahul Gandhi’s opposition: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visited the Andaman and called the project “destruction in the guise of development” and a “mega scam.” BJP’s allegation: The BJP alleges that while India is encircling China (strategic containment) through this project, the Congress is protecting China’s interests by opposing it. Rhetoric: BJP’s social media handles and leaders have claimed that China is scared of this project and Rahul Gandhi is trying to stop it. The BJP has called it “treason” and “China’s agenda.” Corporate allegations: Rahul Gandhi has alleged that land is being taken away from local people and given to the Adani Group.
The Congress has denied these allegations and called the project a “destruction for Adani’s benefit.” The Congress says the project is a “death knell” for the environment and a violation of tribal rights. The Congress has demanded that the project be subjected to parliamentary review and that such destruction should not occur under the guise of development.
