Legendary Malayalam actress R Subbalakshmi, famous for Colgate ads, passes away

Thiruvananthapuram: Renowned Malayalam actress R Subbalakshmi, celebrated for her roles in Malayalam cinema and iconic appearances in Colgate advertisements, passed away at the age of 87 in a private hospital located in Thiruvananthapuram. Widely recognized for her multifaceted talents, Subbalakshmi left an indelible mark in the film industry.

She was revered for her ability to portray grandmotherly characters in Malayalam films with remarkable delicacy and skill, earning her distinction as a distinguished supporting actress. Her memorable performances graced numerous popular movies, including acclaimed films like “Kalyanaraman” (2002), “Pandippada” (2005), and “Nandanam” (2002).

Beyond her cinematic achievements, Subbalakshmi had a multifaceted career. She was not only an accomplished actress but also a Carnatic musician and a proficient painter. Her legacy extends beyond the silver screen; she was a revered figure in television advertisements, notably known for her association with Colgate toothpaste commercials.

Before making her mark in the film industry, Subbalakshmi embarked on her professional journey with All India Radio in 1951. Her association with the organization was profound, becoming the first woman composer from South India. Additionally, she served as a music and dance instructor at Jawahar Balabhavan, showcasing her diverse skill set.

Subbalakshmi’s passing has been mourned by the Malayalam film fraternity, with stalwarts like Mammootty, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, and Malayalam actor Dileep expressing their condolences. Her contribution to the arts, spanning from cinema to music and painting, has left an enduring legacy in the hearts of her admirers and peers alike, marking her as an irreplaceable icon in the world of Malayalam entertainment.
