When you experience difficulty climbing stairs or walking, elders often say that they seem to have lost their knee grease. In fact, there’s no such grease in the knee; rather, it’s synovial fluid that provides lubrication. It can’t be increased by a single food. However, proper eating habits can definitely support it. Here’s what CK Birla Orthologist Dr. Ashwani Maichand has to say:
Muscles provide strength and support to the knees. Therefore, it’s essential to eat a protein-rich diet. Include foods like lentils, chickpeas, kidney beans, green gram, cheese, yogurt, eggs, fish, or chicken in your diet. Eating this type of food supports your knees as you age.
Eat a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids to strengthen and support your knees. To help, include walnuts, flax seeds, fatty fish, chia seeds, and other foods in your diet. Consuming these foods can reduce inflammation.
Vitamin C is essential for the formation of collagen in cartilage. For this, consume foods like amla, guava, orange, seasonal fruits, lemon, kiwi, and capsicum. Making a habit of eating fruits and vegetables daily can improve not only the knees but the entire body.
Knee health requires not only strong cartilage but also strong bones. You can include foods like milk, yogurt, ragi, and cheese as vitamin D-rich foods.
Foods like spinach, fenugreek, broccoli, carrots, tomatoes, and capsicum provide different vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Try to include a variety of colored vegetables and fruits in your plate every day.
