The central government has made some changes to the process for obtaining Aadhaar cards for children. These changes will affect children under the age of 5. These changes will make it easier to obtain Aadhaar cards for children. According to reports, Aadhaar registration for children under the age of 5 will now be based on the head-of-family system. Simply put, this means that a child’s Aadhaar can be obtained only through the child’s guardian’s identification.
However, it is essential that the child’s parents have a valid Aadhaar card. According to reports, biometric authentication has been made mandatory for this process. This means that biometric authentication of one parent will be required when obtaining a child’s Aadhaar card. It is worth noting that the birth certificate is considered the primary document for proving the child’s date of birth and relationship.
Previously, biometric authentication from either parent was not required when applying for a child’s Aadhaar. This means that Aadhaar was created based solely on the child’s photo and birth certificate.
In addition, in the case of other documents, the process was completed based on the parents’ identification.
Aadhaar is required for young children for several reasons, including:
1. Most schools nowadays require a child’s Aadhaar card as proof of identity and address at the time of admission.
- Furthermore, if you wish to obtain a passport for your child, Aadhaar serves as a key document, simplifying and expediting the process.
- It is also required to open a bank savings account in the child’s name or to avail of investment schemes like Sukanya Samriddhi.
- Under the new rules, Aadhaar registration for children under the age of 5 is now entirely based on a Head of Family (HoF)-based process. Let’s understand in steps how to apply for Aadhaar now.
To apply for a child’s Aadhaar, first ensure that the child’s parents or legal guardians have a valid Aadhaar card. This means that without the parents’ Aadhaar, the child’s Aadhaar cannot be generated. Also, have the child’s birth certificate ready to prove their date of birth and their relationship to the family. Now, go to your nearest Aadhaar enrolment centre. Fill out the enrolment form and enter the address details that are on the guardian’s (HoF) Aadhaar card. It’s worth noting that fingerprints or iris scans are not taken for young children.
So, biometric authentication will be performed by one of the parents instead. This means that the fingerprints or eye scans of one of the parents will be taken. You will then receive a receipt and a physical copy of the Aadhaar will be sent to your address. You can also add your child’s profile to the Aadhaar app if you wish.
