Supreme Court Forms Committee to Investigate Student Protest Violence

The Supreme Court has constituted a five-member high-powered inquiry committee to investigate the violence that occurred during the student protests. Retired Supreme Court judge Justice R. Subhash Reddy will head the committee. Besides him, the committee will consist of four members: two former judges, a former CBI director, and a former DGP.

According to a Live Law report, the Supreme Court has constituted a high-powered committee headed by former Supreme Court judge R. Subhash Reddy to investigate the violence that occurred during the Parliament March on July 20th last month. It will investigate all allegations related to the violence.

In addition to Justice R. Subhash Reddy, the other four members of the committee include former Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court Ravi Shankar Jha, former Delhi High Court judge Justice Shalinder Kaur, former CBI Director Rishi Kumar Shukla, and former DGP of Meghalaya L.R. Bishnoi.

The Supreme Court has directed this committee to investigate allegations of police brutality as well as the violence committed by protesters.

In its directive, the Supreme Court stated that in light of the facts presented before it and the various detailed suggestions made, the Supreme Court deems it appropriate to constitute a High Powered Inquiry Committee (HPEC) in the interest of justice.
