On 31 October 2026, leaders of the ‘India’ alliance led by Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge organized a symbolic ‘mass impeachment’ meeting against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Leaders of about 21 political parties of the opposition participated in this ‘mock parliament’ (symbolic parliament) organized at the Delhi residence of Mallikarjun Kharge. This meeting was presided over by former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar.
The main points and allegations made in this meeting are as follows:
Serious allegations against Election Commission: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge presented six major charge sheets (proposals) against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The opposition alleged that the Election Commission encouraged vote theft, made changes in Form 6 without parliamentary oversight and deleted the names of about 13.2 crore voters in the country from the voter list.

Rahul Gandhi’s sharp statement: Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, in the concluding speech of this mock Parliament, said that these elections were ‘illegal’ due to large-scale deletion of names of voters in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He warned the country’s officials and institutions, saying that “the situation is changing in the country” and that the Chief Election Commissioner should resign from his post.

Strict warning to officials: Rahul Gandhi said that anyone suppressing the voice of the public today, tomorrow or in the future will not be able to escape. He alleged that the government was trying to stop people from coming to Delhi to join the opposition protests.

Show of opposition solidarity: Many other opposition leaders including Samajwadi Party’s Dharmendra Yadav and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha’s Mahua Maji also participated in this meeting and showed solidarity ahead of the big rally to be held at Ramlila Maidan on November 1.

BJP’s reaction: On the other hand, the ruling BJP termed the opposition’s move as an ‘insult to Parliament and the Constitution’. BJP spokespersons Sambit Patra and Sudhanshu Trivedi hit out at Rahul Gandhi, saying he was trying to create a false image of Parliament and Congress should make him ‘mock prime minister for life’.
