Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s convoy faced massive opposition from an angry mob in Halisahar, North 24 Parganas district, West Bengal. Banerjee, who was on her way to the home of a deceased Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker, was blocked by people. The protest quickly escalated, and the crowd surrounded her vehicle. According to eyewitnesses, protesters threw mud at Banerjee’s vehicle.
Some members of the crowd also threw water bottles and shoes at her convoy. The crowd shouted slogans against Banerjee and made derogatory remarks about her. Seeing the situation rapidly escalate, police personnel deployed for security took charge. The police managed to repel the mob and escort Mamata Banerjee’s convoy out of the area under tight security.
TMC chief and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated that an angry mob suddenly attacked her car with stones and shoes. However, the car’s windows were closed, preventing Mamata Banerjee from being hit. She explained that if the windows hadn’t been closed, the stone would have hit her head, causing a fracture. Such a stone attack could have resulted in her death. She further stated that this happened in front of the police. “I’ve never seen anything like this before. What is happening?… The police are providing security to the BJP.”
The protest in Halishahar is reportedly related to a complaint filed by the family of a deceased TMC worker. The family has leveled serious allegations against the local police. They claim that the deceased was brutally assaulted after being taken into custody, leading to his death. These allegations fueled an already strong atmosphere of resentment in the area. Meanwhile, upon hearing of Mamata Banerjee’s arrival, a large number of people gathered on the road and began protesting against her convoy.
In response to the violent crowd, police immediately deployed additional forces. Mamata Banerjee was escorted from the area under tight security. Following the incident, tension remained high in Halishahar, and police were monitoring the situation.
