Following the CID summoning TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee in connection with the forged signatures case in the West Bengal Assembly, another major incident has come to light. On Saturday, when Abhishek Banerjee arrived in Sonarpur after visiting Beleghata to discuss post-election violence, he was attacked by locals. During the attack, he was beaten. Banerjee walked away wearing a helmet. Banerjee is on a tour to meet TMC workers and their families affected by the violence that followed the change of power in Bengal. During the attack in Sonarpur, Banerjee was pelted with eggs and stones, and locals chanted “thief, thief!” Banerjee stated that the attack was BJP-sponsored. “They wanted to kill me.”
Abhishek Banerjee has targeted the BJP following the attack in Sonarpur. He said, “This is all BJP-sponsored. Look what they have done. This is an example of their democracy. Not even a month has passed, and the police are nowhere to be seen.” It is alleged that Abhishek Banerjee was attacked when he arrived in Sonarpur. Eggs and stones were thrown at him during the visit. The TMC leader was wearing a helmet during the attack, and security personnel escorted him to safety. Eggs and stones were pelted at Banerjee, and locals chanted “thief, thief!” Sonarpur falls in South 24 Parganas, near Kolkata.
Abhishek Banerjee also alleged that despite prior notice to authorities, he was not provided adequate security. He stated, “I will not leave here until the police and security forces ensure security here. They are trying to demolish my house and want to kill me.” Following the attack, Abhishek Banerjee staged a sit-in protest.
Following the results of the Bengal elections on May 4, incidents of TMC workers being beaten up were reported in some areas. Now, Abhishek Banerjee is on a tour to meet the families of all the victims. When Abhishek Banerjee was attacked in Sonarpur, TMC workers present at the scene protested.
