A mild odor from urine is quite common, but if the smell becomes very strong, it may not be normal. If the urine smells strong, it could indicate changes in the body. Many of us ignore the problem of urine smelling bad, thinking it to be common, but there could be serious reasons for it.

Dehydration can be the cause of a strong odor in urine. In fact, when you don’t drink enough water, the urine becomes more concentrated. This increases the amount of waste products present in it, which can cause a strong odor. If the urine appears dark yellow and smells bad, increasing your water intake may be beneficial.

Smelly urine may be due to dietary irregularities, especially if you consume too many spices like garlic, onion, and asparagus. Taking certain vitamin supplements can also cause urine to smell.

If urine smells strong and is accompanied by symptoms such as burning, pain, frequent urination, or fever, it could be a sign of a urinary tract infection (UTI). During a UTI, bacteria can cause the urine to smell strong and unusual. In such cases, it’s important to consult a doctor.

Some people may develop a sweet or fruity odor when their blood sugar levels are high. This may be related to glucose levels in the body. If the odor is accompanied by symptoms such as excessive thirst, frequent urination, or rapid weight loss, medical advice should be sought.

Due to hormonal changes during pregnancy, some women may notice a change in the smell of urine. Certain medications and vitamin supplements can also alter the smell of urine.
