UIDAI launched a new Aadhaar Face Authentication Software Development Kit (SDK) and a dedicated sandbox. This will allow banks, fintech companies, insurance companies, and other financial institutions to integrate Aadhaar-based face authentication directly into their mobile apps. This means that users will no longer need to download separate apps for face authentication. They will be able to perform Aadhaar-based face authentication directly from their bank apps. The Aadhaar Face Authentication Software Development Kit (SDK) was launched at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai. Its purpose is to simplify digital onboarding, eliminating the need for users to switch between multiple applications while completing Aadhaar face authentication. UIDAI has released a playbook that will serve as a guide for banking, finance, and insurance (BFSI) companies. This will enable these companies to easily verify the identities of their customers, employees, and partners through Aadhaar.
For your information, until now, the FaceRD app was required to be installed on the user’s device for Aadhaar face authentication. The FaceRD app ran in the background during authentication. According to UIDAI, this added an extra step to the onboarding process and required users to download another app, FaceRD, to their devices. This new initiative fulfills a long-standing demand from banks and fintech companies. They will now be able to onboard customers easily and securely through their mobile apps.
UIDAI Chairman Neelkanth Mishra stated that the new SDK will allow partner banks and businesses to perform Aadhaar authentication on their own servers, rather than sending requests through UIDAI’s central system. Under this model, authentication occurs on the bank’s own servers, rather than on UIDAI’s central infrastructure. This means the bank protects its local authentication process, while the risk does not reach UIDAI’s systems.
The Aadhaar Face Authentication SDK is a technology that allows companies to integrate face-recognition Aadhaar verification directly into their Android or iPhone apps. This means that users no longer need to visit another app or website to verify their Aadhaar by showing their face; this task will be performed seamlessly within the app.
This SDK is designed to work on common users’ smartphones. It is hoped that it will help government departments, banks, non-banking financial companies (NBFCs), fintech firms, and other organizations more effectively implement Aadhaar face authentication services.
Along with the SDK, UIDAI has also launched the Aadhaar Face Authentication Sandbox. This sandbox is designed for developers and quality assurance teams to test key steps in the authentication process.
