Now, views will increase as soon as a video is played! YouTube’s rules will change starting August 24th. Will creators’ fortunes improve or their earnings plummet?

YouTube, the world’s most popular video streaming platform, has made a major change to its view-counting system. This change will have the greatest impact on video creators. YouTube has announced that, starting August 24th, 2026, a single view count will apply to all video formats, both long-form and short-form videos. This means that the first second a user plays a video will be considered a view.

The company announced this change on the social media platform X. YouTube clarified that there will no longer be a fixed watch time required for a video to count views. The company believes this move will exponentially increase creators’ total views.

YouTube says this decision will make it easier for creators to secure sponsorships and brand deals. According to YouTube, “We’re unifying the view count to reflect creators’ true reach on YouTube. This will make it easier for creators to demonstrate their value to brand partners.”

It’s important to note that this change will not impact creators’ earnings under the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). YouTube recently doubled the watch-time requirement for new creators to join YPP.

Previously, YouTube used different view-counting systems for different formats. However, the company did not publicly disclose how the old system worked. This new, single, standard system was first introduced for shorts last year.

Regarding YouTube’s decision, YouTuber ArtChad posted that most YouTubers earn $15 to $20 per 1,000 views from brand integrations. This is provided that the average watch duration does not fall below 38%. A sudden increase in views will lead to a decline in average watch duration, potentially impacting creators’ actual earnings.

YouTuber Miles Tech commented on the new change, saying that if it doesn’t negatively impact payouts and RPM (Revenue Per Mile), creators will now create more long-form videos.

Some creators, claiming to have spoken directly with YouTube, said that even if a video autoplays for just 1 second on the app’s home screen, it will still count as 1 view. This will lead to a rapid increase in everyone’s views.

Although the method for publicly visible views has changed, YouTube will continue to show creators the old metric of engaged views in their dashboard. This will allow creators to see how many users actually chose to watch their videos.

Views will now be counted as soon as a video plays. This will make each video’s view count appear faster than before. Therefore, if brands offer sponsorships based solely on total views, creators will benefit. However, if a user accidentally plays a video and then closes it within two seconds, they will still receive views, but the average watch time for that video will be significantly reduced. Consequently, major brands pay based on average watch durations with at least 38-40% retention. Loss of watch time can lead to lower sponsorship rates for major brands.
