The BJP has reacted sharply to senior advocate and MP Kapil Sibal’s comments regarding the alleged attack on Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee. BJP national spokesperson Shahzad Poonawala said that it is unfortunate that a person who has earned crores of rupees through his legal practice in the Supreme Court has such a negative view of the country’s constitutional institutions. He alleged that some leaders, in the name of opposing the BJP, try to tarnish the country’s image.
Shahzad Poonawala said that Kapil Sibal’s statement shows that he lacks faith in India’s constitutional institutions. He questioned whether, in opposing the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, they are now opposing the country itself. The BJP spokesperson alleged that targeting Indian institutions for political reasons is wrong.
The BJP leader said that Kapil Sibal and other opposition leaders did not raise their voices during the violence that followed the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections. He claimed that BJP MP Khagen Murmu was attacked, BJP President J.P. Nadda’s convoy was attacked, and violence erupted several times during the Panchayat elections, but the opposition remained silent.
Poonawala said that the courts had also made serious comments on the law and order situation in West Bengal on several occasions. He claimed that the High Court had questioned the rule of law in the state, and the Supreme Court had also expressed concern over violence during various elections. The BJP spokesperson said that Kapil Sibal never publicly responded to those matters.
The BJP spokesperson claimed that information now emerging suggests that the alleged attack on Abhishek Banerjee may be linked to factionalism within the TMC. He said that some photographs have surfaced and several TMC MLAs are staying away from Mamata Banerjee’s meetings, making the matter appear to be an internal dispute within the party.
Shahzad Poonawala launched a simultaneous attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, TMC, and Kapil Sibal, alleging that these leaders have been continuously questioning India’s democratic institutions, economy, and security forces. He said that having political differences with the BJP is one thing, but defaming the country and its institutions in its name is not acceptable.
Political accusations and counter-accusations between the BJP and the opposition have intensified following the statements made regarding the alleged attack on Abhishek Banerjee. While the BJP is calling Kapil Sibal’s statement against the country and institutions, the opposition is continuously questioning the government and the BJP on this issue.
