
The Home Ministry has formed a high-level committee on demographic change. Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that this committee will evaluate the demographic change occurring across India due to illegal migration and other unusual factors. He stated, “Unnatural demographic change due to infiltration and other factors poses a significant challenge to the present and future of any nation. To address this challenge, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a high-level committee on demographic change on August 15, 2025. I am pleased to inform you that the government has formed this committee. A retired judge will chair the committee.”
Since the formation of the Bharatiya Janata Party government in West Bengal, continuous action is being taken against infiltrators. Strict action is being taken under the direction of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. This has led to illegal infiltrators flocking to Bangladesh. On Tuesday morning (May 26, 2026), infiltrators arrived at the Hakimpur checkpost to enter Bangladesh. Following the issuance of the Detected Default Holding Center directive, Bangladeshis are returning to the border in large numbers.
The Union Home Minister posted on X that the committee, headed by Justice Prakash Prabhakar Naolekar (Retd.), will have Durga Shankar Mishra (Retd. IAS), Balaji Srivastava (Retd. IPS), and Dr. Shamika Ravi as members, along with the Census Commissioner. The Joint Secretary (Foreigners-I), Ministry of Home Affairs, will be the committee’s member secretary.
He stated, “Demographic change is a serious problem related to our sovereignty, as well as national security, law and order, serious changes in social structure, and the protection of tribal society. This committee will comprehensively assess the demographic change occurring across India due to illegal migration and other abnormal factors, and analyze the patterns of abnormal population changes at the level of religious and social communities, and propose a planned and timely solution.” Home Minister Amit Shah has repeatedly raised the issue of infiltration into the country from various platforms. He stated that the central government is committed not only to stopping infiltration but also to identifying and expelling every illegal immigrant from the country. He previously stated, “Tripura, Assam, and West Bengal have governments that support the principle that there should be no infiltration. The BSF should not only protect the border but also build communication bridges with village patwaris, police stations, district collectors, and superintendents of police to detect and block infiltration routes, infiltration routes, and cattle smuggling routes.”
