WhatsApp is making its biggest change to its platform yet. The company has confirmed that the username feature will be launched globally by June 2026. After this, users will be able to chat, call, and interact with businesses without sharing their phone number. This move will move WhatsApp towards a handle-based identity like platforms like Telegram and Instagram.
The Journey from Phone Number to Username
Until now, the mobile number has been the sole basis for identification on WhatsApp. However, with the new update, both users and businesses will be able to reserve unique handles, such as ‘ICICI Bank’ or ‘Tom Clark’. This will strengthen both privacy and ease of connectivity. The company has described this as an optional feature, meaning users can continue working with their phone number if they wish.
Privacy and Spam Control
WhatsApp says that the username feature will provide users with additional privacy. It will also provide better control over spam messages and make connecting with businesses easier. Experts believe this change will increase discoverability on the platform and provide a more secure user experience.
WhatsApp is introducing not only usernames but also dynamic pricing for business messaging. This will require companies to bid in real-time to ensure their marketing messages reach users. Its beta testing will take place in the second half of 2026 and implementation will begin in the second quarter of 2027. This could prove to be a major revenue model for WhatsApp.
While this change will bring privacy and convenience to users, questions may also arise regarding data ownership and platform control. OTT messaging platforms in Europe, India, and the Middle East are already under regulatory pressure. Therefore, WhatsApp may face regulatory challenges with these changes.
