Life-Saving Tips for Heart Attacks

Date:

Recognizing Symptoms

The first step is recognizing the symptoms of a heart attack. Common signs include:

  • Chest pain or discomfort: Often described as pressure, squeezing, or fullness.
  • Pain radiating to other areas: This may include the arms, neck, jaw, back, or stomach.
  • Shortness of breath: This can occur with or without chest discomfort.
  • Other symptoms: Cold sweats, nausea, lightheadedness, or unexplained fatigue.

Women may experience different symptoms such as sharp pain in the neck or back. It’s crucial not to ignore these signs and act promptly.

Immediate Actions

If you suspect a heart attack, follow these immediate actions:

  1. Call Emergency Services: Dial 108 (or your local emergency number) immediately. Inform the operator about the situation and follow their instructions.
  2. Rest in a Comfortable Position: The affected individual should sit down comfortably. If feeling dizzy, lying on their left side with legs bent can improve blood flow to the heart.
  3. Open the Front Door: If indoors, open the front door to allow emergency responders easy access when they arrive.
  4. Stay Calm: Encourage deep breathing and try to keep calm while waiting for help. Panic can worsen the situation.

Avoiding Common Mistakes

During a heart attack, avoid these common mistakes:

  • Do Not Rely Solely on Nitroglycerin: While it may relieve symptoms for those who have it prescribed, it does not stop a heart attack; professional medical help is essential.
  • Avoid Coughing Repeatedly: Coughing can worsen conditions during a heart attack; if necessary, cough gently.
