The opposition’s motion to remove Speaker Om Birla from his post in the Lok Sabha was rejected by voice vote after a debate. The resolution, introduced by Congress MP Mohammad Javed, was discussed for over 12 hours. After Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s response on behalf of the government, the presiding Chairman, Jagdambika Pal, put it before the House for a vote. Amid uproar from opposition members, the House rejected the resolution by voice vote.
Birla was not present in the House during the discussion and voting on the resolution. Home Minister Amit Shah, targeting the opposition for bringing the resolution against the Lok Sabha Speaker, said that the opposition parties had questioned Birla’s integrity, which was very regrettable. Responding to the discussion on the opposition’s resolution in the House, he also said that no one has the right to speak against the rules. Opposition members created a ruckus over a single word from the Home Minister and demanded an apology from him.
Earlier, during the debate on the Opposition’s resolution motion, Amit Shah stated that, based on the established history of this House, its proceedings are based on mutual trust. The Speaker acts as an impartial custodian, representing both the ruling party and the opposition. Specific rules have been established by the Lok Sabha to guide how the Speaker should conduct sessions. This House is not a marketplace. Members are expected to express their views and participate in discussions in accordance with its rules and procedures. When Shah raised the issue of Rahul Gandhi’s absence from the House at a crucial moment, opposition MPs created a ruckus. They also raised slogans demanding “Amit Shah apologize.”
