PM launches 100 Kisan Drones, promises constant support to startups

PM witnessing Kisan Drone in action at 100 places across the country by Garuda Aerospace Pvt Limited, through video conferencing, in New Delhi on February 19, 2022.

This is a new chapter in the direction of the modern farming system of the 21st century. I am sure this launch will not only prove to be a milestone in the development of the drone sector but will also open endless doors of possibilities. I am also told that Garuda Aerospace has set a target of making one lakh ‘Made in India’ drones in the next two years. This will generate new jobs and new opportunities for several youngsters. I congratulate the team of Garuda Aerospace and all my young friends for this accomplishment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said today while launching 100 Kisan Drones at Kisan drone facility in Manesar, Haryana.

“India did not waste any time in apprehensions regarding the drones. We trusted the young talent and went ahead with the new thinking. From the announcements made in this budget to other policy decisions, the country has openly given priority to technology and innovation. Its results are in front of us today. In the present times, we are witnessing the diverse uses of drones. During the Beating Retreat, the entire nation witnessed a spectacular display of 1000 drones,” PM further said.

Highlighting the opportunities, the prime minister further elaborated, “Today, under the Swamitva scheme, the accounts of the land and houses are being prepared through drones in the villages. Medicines are being supplied through drones. Vaccines are reaching remote areas. Drones are also being used to spray agrochemicals in the farmers’ fields. Kisan Drones are now the beginning of a new age revolution in this direction. For example, in the coming times, with the help of high-capacity kisan drones, farmers can send fresh vegetables, fruits, flowers from their fields to the markets. People associated with pisciculture can send fresh fish catch directly to the market from ponds, rivers and sea. The produce of the fishermen and farmers will reach the market in the shortest possible time with minimum damage. Consequently, the income of my farmer and fishermen brothers and sisters will also increase. Many such possibilities are knocking at our doors.”

“I am glad that many more companies in the country are moving rapidly in this direction. A new ecosystem of drone startups is being created in India. At present, there are more than 200 drone startups operating in the country. Very soon this number will reach thousands. This will also generate lakhs of new employment opportunities. I believe that in the near future, this growing capability of India will showcase India under a new leadership role before the whole world in the field of drones. With that, I would like to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart. My best wishes to you all. My best wishes to the prowess of the youth. I congratulate today’s youth for all the startups that have come up today, for being daring and taking risks. And the Government of India promises to be your constant support and to walk shoulder to shoulder with you through the policies. It will not let any obstacle come in your way. I wish you the very best! Thank you very much,” prime minister Narendra Modi said.

Kisan Drone Scheme- In farming, apart from fertilizers and seeds, what is costly is the labour wage. Leaving few rich states like Punjab and Haryana, even poorer states like Bihar do not get enough labor at the time of farming. In such a situation, technology has stood in favor of the farmers. But the use of technology in farming is a bit expensive.

The government is promoting the use of drones to reduce the agricultural cost of farmers. A drone is an unmanned small aircraft that can be controlled remotely or it can fly autonomously. It consists of a GPS based navigation system, a variety of sensors and a controller. It works on battery based energy. It is flown and controlled by the controller. Depending on the end use, many types of equipment such as cameras, insecticide spraying devices etc. are also installed on it.

  • Flying height- Drones can fly around 50 – 100 m height. Above 50m, a special authorization is required.
  • License required –Currently, flying agricultural drones depends on national laws. For non-commercial use, no pilot license is required if you’re operating nano and micro drones, the new government rules state.
  • Weather – A drone can fly under any weather condition. Drones are water resistant, but image quality can be damaged if pictures are taken during rainy weather.
  • Distances –It depends on the drone capability and size. Fixed wings drones have longer flight time and can cover more field in one flight. For instance, 50 min flight time will cover up to 12 km2.
  • Drone cost – What is the exact cost of drones used in agriculture? A standard drone for public use with the capacity of 12 liters starts at Rs. 3.45 lakh. In the agricultural sector, small drones without specific technology can go from Rs. 3.60 lakh to Rs. 10.0 lakh according to its water-holding capacity. The higher technological drones used specifically for agriculture start at Rs.15.0 lakhs.

Images taken by a drone and satellite Images

Drones can take pictures with a resolution down to a few cm per pixel. A drone can get higher quality and higher precision of images in real time as they can fly below the clouds. Besides, a satellite only takes pictures once a week or once a month.

Information that gets Farmers from the Images

Raw data collected by drones gets translated into useful and comprehensible information for farmers thanks to specific algorithms. Some of the information these images provide is:

  • Plant counting: Plant size, plot statistics, stand number, compromised plots, planter skips.
  • Plant height: Crop height and density.
  • Vegetation indices: Leaf area, anomaly detection, treatment efficacy, infestations, phenology
  • Water needs: Damage/drown out.

Drones ensure a permanent monitoring of the crop in the field from planting to harvest.

The central government is working towards connecting the farmers of the country with technical farming. For which now Kisan Drone Yojana is being started by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Under this scheme, subsidy will be provided to the farmers on buying drones for spraying pesticides and nutrients in their fields. This grant will be provided to SC-ST, small and marginal, women and farmers of northeastern states up to 50% or maximum up to Rs 5 lakh.

Apart from this, a grant of up to 40% or a maximum of Rs 4 lakh will be provided to other farmers and up to 75% to the Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) on the purchase of drones. But under the sub-machine on agricultural mechanization, a grant will be given to the recognized Agricultural Training Institute or Krishi Vigyan Kendras on purchase of drones up to 100%.

What is Kisan Drone Yojana?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has started Kisan Drone Yojana to attract the farmers of the country to buy agricultural drones. Through this scheme, citizens of different sections and regions of the country will be given different grants for buying drones. Initially, through this scheme, the central government had planned to provide drones to a farmer in all villages of the country, but later the central government decided to give a grant for purchasing individual drones. Because through drones, farmers will be able to easily do work like land records, crop evaluation, spraying of pesticides and nutrients. This will save both their labor and money.

  • Through agricultural drones, insecticides, medicines and urea can be easily sprayed on 1 acre of land in 7 to 10 minutes. Apart from this, there will also be saving of pesticides, medicines and fertilizers.
