Residents complain of constant bursting of crackers at night in Tilak Nagar, Bengaluru
Residents of Tilak Nagar are facing sleepless nights due to the incessant bursting of crackers in their neighbourhood. They have urged both the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the police to take immediate action against this nuisance.
Devi S, a resident of the area, expressed her frustration, stating, “For many weeks now, we have been startled by people bursting crackers late into the night. It’s perplexing because there are no cricket matches or weddings happening. The loud bursts of crackers are undoubtedly disturbing our sleep. On several occasions, these crackers are ignited even after midnight when the surroundings are calm, making even the slightest sound magnify into a significant disruption. Our peaceful sleep is being severely compromised due to these incessant bursts.”
Other residents added that awareness programmes should be initiated in order to prevent such activities.
Anil Kumar, another resident, said, “While it’s common to witness crackers during Deepavali, we now hear them go off during other events like festivals, cricket matches, or weddings.
While they may bring joy to those igniting them, they pose danger and annoyance to onlookers and neighbours. Since there are no strict rules to prevent such activities, the civic agency should initiate awareness programmes. This issue particularly affects students studying at home, as they struggle to concentrate amid the constant disruptions. In the past, we have even experienced instances where crackers burst inside colleges, causing disturbances in classrooms. Thankfully, such incidents have reduced lately, but the peace of the neighborhood remains compromised.”
Residents highlight that during Deepavali or other occasions, there is a conscious effort to promote green crackers, which emit less smoke and sound. However, most shops continue to sell non-green crackers. Additionally, while the number of cracker shops tends to surge during the Deepavali festival, there has been an increase in shops that operate throughout the year, indicating a consistent demand for crackers beyond the festive season. Residents emphasise that during Deepavali, there used to be a restriction on bursting crackers after 9 pm, but now, such regulations seem to be lacking, leading them to call for a ban on year-round cracker bursting.
