Blood in the toilet often scares people, and the first thought that comes to mind is whether it’s a serious illness. However, in most cases, it’s caused by piles, a condition that can be treated with simple treatment. However, doctors say it’s not always right to take it lightly, as in some cases, this symptom can also be a sign of a serious disease like anal cancer.
Speaking of piles, it is a condition in which the veins around the rectum or anus become swollen. This problem can occur with aging, constipation, prolonged sitting, or pregnancy. Piles usually cause bright red blood during bowel movements, along with itching, burning, and mild swelling. Fortunately, these symptoms often subside on their own after some time or are cured with simple treatment.
According to a report by the cancer information agency ProlifeCancerCentre, if this bleeding recurs or persists for a long time, it’s important to be cautious. Anal cancer is a rare but serious disease in which abnormal cells begin to grow rapidly in or around the anus. Initially, its symptoms may resemble hemorrhoids, confusing many people.
It’s crucial to understand the difference between the two. Hemorrhoids typically occur only during bowel movements and stop after a while, whereas bleeding in anal cancer can be persistent and darker in color. Similarly, hemorrhoid pain is often worse when using the toilet or sitting, but in cancer, the pain can persist and worsen over time.
Also, if you notice changes in bowel habits, such as frequent visits to the toilet or changing stool size, don’t ignore it. Unexplained weight loss, fatigue, or lumps around the anus can also be serious signs. Doctors clearly state that if bleeding persists for more than a week, pain increases, or any new symptoms appear, it’s important to get tested immediately. Especially for people over 50, such signs should not be ignored.
