Do you see small spots, lines, or floating objects before your eyes? If so, it’s not advisable to take it lightly. This problem is generally considered normal, but in some cases, it can be a sign of a serious illness. These spots in the eyes are medically known as “eye floaters.” They often appear with aging or vision loss.
Sometimes, they appear as small lines or blurry spots that appear floating before the eyes. Usually, they fade with blinking, and the brain ignores them. However, a recent study from Radboud University Medical Center has sounded a warning about these floaters. According to this research, published in March 2026, if these spots appear continuously or suddenly increase, it could be a sign of a serious eye problem.
This research, published in the Annals of Family Medicine, analyzed data from nearly 42,000 patients. It found that those who experienced frequent floaters, flashes of light, or both, sometimes developed a serious condition called retinal detachment. Retinal detachment is a condition in which the inner layer of the eye begins to separate from its original position. This is a vital part of the eye that senses light. If left untreated, it can lead to vision loss.
The study also revealed that those who experience floaters and flashes are at increased risk. While this risk doesn’t affect everyone, it’s still not advisable to ignore it. According to the UK’s health service NHS, sometimes this problem is caused by “posterior vitreous detachment”, which is usually harmless. In this, there is a change in the gel-like structure present inside the eye and small clumps of collagen are formed. However, if these spots suddenly become more visible, persist or are accompanied by problems like flashes of light, shadows or blurred vision, then it is important to contact a doctor immediately.
